MD Festival Weekend Report

MD Festival Weekend Report

On the weekend of the 20th / 21st of September another Modern Drummer festival was held. This year the MD team decided to run the festival at the Performance Arts Center of the Purchase College, State University of New York. Sonor was thrilled when the artist line up was announced earlier this year, including two of the most outstanding Sonor artists.

Sunday saw the performance of Derek Roddy, who is no doubt THE master of the blast beat. Derek performed to playback tracks of recent projects, as well as the studio project “Tramedy” he worked out with a very close friend of his. A lot of questions (including the most popular “how do you play so fast?”) came up in the audience so Derek – ready to give his feet a rest - ended up in Question & Answer.

Derek performed on his SQ2 drumkit in Black-Silver-Sparkle finish, including various 600 Series Hardware. Special Thanks to his supporting companies: Meinl Cymbals, Vater Drumsticks, Remo Drumheads, Axis Pedals. Visit for more information on Derek’s work.

As the day went by, it was time for Gavin Harrison to hit the stage. Performing to playback tracks of his most popular band “Porcupine Tree”, he also performed to tracks of his latest album release “Drop” by Gavin & 05Ric. Announced as the winner of the category “Prog” of this year’s Modern Drummer Readers Poll, he received his award after his performance personally from MD’s own Bill Miller.

Gavin performed on a SQ2 drumkit in “Golden Madrone”. Special Thanks to his supporting companies: Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks, Remo Drumheads. Visit for more information on Gavin.

Numerous New York area based Sonor Artists such as Jojo Mayer (Nerve, Independent), Guy Licata (Hercules & the Love Affair), Charlie Z (Blotted Science), Wally „Gator“ Watson (NuQ-Leus), Ian Froman (Karen Bach) stopped by at the weekend to get a buzz.

Special thanks to each and everyone at the Modern Drummer Festival Organisation team and all the supporting companies!
