Guy Licata

Sonor embodies a rare balance of legacy and innovation, a company rooted in centuries of craftsmanship yet constantly pushing the boundaries of drum design. Their engineering precision translates into an instrument that feels alive under the sticks: deeply musical, endlessly reliable, and forward-thinking in every detail.

Guy Licata is a Brooklyn-based drummer, musical director, and educator whose work bridges expressive performance, deep technical understanding, and thoughtful instrument design. Known for his dynamic touch, innovative use of technique, and stylistic versatility, Guy has performed and recorded across a wide range of musical contexts, from groove-driven popular music to more exploratory and avant garde projects.

As a performer, Guy has worked with a diverse roster of artists including Bill Laswell and Shakira, and continues to collaborate across live performance, studio recording, and music direction. His playing is rooted in feel and musical intention, with a strong emphasis on sound, dynamics, and interaction.

Guy is also a highly regarded educator with extensive teaching experience. In addition to serving on faculty at the Drummers Collective, he has led masterclasses and worked privately with artists across music and film, including H.E.R. and Riz Ahmed in preparation for the Academy Award-winning film Sound of Metal. His teaching approach focuses on sound production, movement efficiency, and developing a personal voice on the instrument.

Beyond performance and education, Guy has played a significant role in product design and innovation within the musical instrument industry. He is the founder of Reflexx, a drummer-focused product company developed through years of real-world playing and pedagogy. Reflexx was acquired by the Avedis Zildjian Company, where Guy went on to work as Global Innovation Manager across Zildjian and Vic Firth, contributing to artist-driven product development, design strategy, and long-term innovation initiatives.

Approaching the drum set as both an expressive instrument and a precision-engineered system, Guy values tools that translate intention with clarity and consistency. Sonor’s legacy of craftsmanship, engineering excellence, and forward-thinking design aligns seamlessly with his philosophy — honoring tradition while continually pushing the possibilities of modern drumming.
