Taro Koyama

Born in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.  Taro moved to Tokyo on the recommendation of Osamu Kawakami(b), and made his debut with the Naoki Nishi(p) trio.  Since the mid-1980s he has been one of the leading jazz drummers in Japan. He moved to the U.S. in 1999 and was active in the New York jazz scene.

After returning to Japan in 2004, he participated in concerts and tours with Norio Maeda(p), Hank Jones(p), Syunzo Ohno(tp) and others. 

In 2013, he released his third leader album, ''Beat the Blues.'' 

In 2019, he performed a concert with Hideki Togi, a gagaku master, in his own trio. He was always ranked high in the popularity poll of jazz magazines. 

His sharp rhythms, solid technique and touch are superb, and his powerful and sensitive drumming has been praised by many musicians in Japan and abroad. He is a part-time lecturer at Showa University of Music.
