Liu Gang

Mr. Liu Gang is liked by majority of percussion fans as his unique charm in the music scene in China. Now he teaches in Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) which is the highest and most professional music school in China. He is associate professor of Department of Percussion, director of Percussion Teaching and Research Section. He also is chairman of Academic Committee of Qingdao Percussion Academy. He was concertmaster Timpani of China NCPA Orchestra and concertmaster of percussion part of CNSO (China national symphony orchestra).
He was born in a musical family, learned percussion from Professor Liu Guangsi who praised by the media as “the Father of Chinese Percussion Music”. He graduated from CCOM, and studied at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the United States under Professor McPherson. 

While studying and working in western classical percussion for many years, he has been involved in learning and playing drums since middle school, and has participated in several jazz groups. After joining Baojia Street 43 band, he invested more time in Funk, R&B and other diversified music.
Mr. Liu Gang has not only been engaged in percussion performance and teaching of symphony orchestra for a long time, but also actively participated in the promotion and popularization of percussion.

 

His works of percussion

“Mr. Gang’s Percussion Manual” is the first western percussion instrument name translation manual in China, which is written by him and published by Shanghai Music Publishing House.
"The Sun Shines on Taxkorgan" and "When I Fall in Love" orchestrated by him, and "Cracking Walnuts" created by him, are widely performed by the domestic percussion scene.


Percussion DVD “Marimba Conjecture” published by Universal Audio & Video Publishing House in 2018 was original and orchestrated by Mr. Liu Gang.
Self-written textbook of the “Central Conservatory of Music for Drum Grading Examination” was published by the Central Conservatory of Music Press in 2019.
