MOMENTUM Drum Series

Honoring the past. Shaping the future.

2025 sets an important milestone in SONOR’s 150-year history. It’s a year dedicated to the company’s legacy, past and tradition, but also the time to look towards innovation, evolution, and new creative horizons, as they are as much a part of SONOR’s tradition and DNA.

In 2025, we are thrilled to introduce our brand-new Made in Germany drum series: MOMENTUM. This line combines the best of all our German-made drums, bringing together the most popular SONOR shell construction, shell materials and hardware features with fresh veneers, timeless wrap finishes and proven matte lacquer finishes.

Built on 150 years of craftsmanship and experience – and developed with a sharp eye on today’s market needs – MOMENTUM is our next step into the future of serially produced drums Made in Germany.

MOMENTUM marks more than a product launch – it’s a defining moment where tradition meets progress. A series that lays the foundation for our next chapter. Available in maple, birch, or beech, the MOMENTUM shells feature SONOR’s most popular 9-ply (6mm) shell construction on all drums. Every wood type is available in an elegant semi gloss veneer, sleek matte lacquers or timeless high-quality Delmar wrap – designed to meet both visual and acoustic expectations.

The four available finishes – Red Pearl (wrap), Satin Pure White (matte lacquer), GT Black (matte lacquer), and California Burl (semi gloss veneer) – bring together favorites from past series with fresh, modern inspiration. California Burl is a completely new finish, making its debut with the MOMENTUM series and launching exclusively with this kit.

When it comes to hardware, MOMENTUM combines the best of our proven innovations – including the acclaimed ProLite T.A.R. tom mounts and our advanced Sound Sustainer system, already known from the SQ1 series, on floor toms.

For us, it was about time.

Now, it's your turn.

This new drum series is now available in stores internationally!

Features

Enhanced O.S.M.: New drum depths

All drums use new and innovative shell depths that fall in between the most popular conventional sizes. They combine two main advantages: Even depth intervals and comfortable positioning.

1 Shell Construction, 3 Shell Materials

All drums use the most requested 9-ply (6 mm) medium shell construction from the SQ2 drum system and are available in beech, birch, and maple.

4 available Finishes

All drums are offered in 4 finishes. These are the Red Pearl (#REP) wrap, California Burl (#CBU) semi gloss veneer and as well as GT Black (#GTB) and Satin Pure White (#SPW) matte lacquers.

Individual Combination Possibilities

As all drums are available in all shell materials and all finishes, the shell material can be individually chosen for each drum.

T.A.R. Tom Mounting System

All mounted toms are equipped with SONOR’s superior T.A.R. tom mounting system.

Sound Sustainer Floor Tom Leg Mounts

Floor Toms use Sound Sustainers, known from the SQ1 series, for mounting the floor tom legs to reduce vibration dissipating into the floor.

A new chapter

Choose your Sound

For all drums within the MOMENTUM Series, we rely on our most popular 9-ply, 6mm medium shell
construction. Renowned for its sonic versatility, full-bodied tone and great projection, this shell
responds to all playing styles, from the lightest touch to the most powerful stroke and everything in
between.

To ensure that drummers of all styles can find a MOMENTUM kit that meets their sound preferences,
all available drum types and sizes are offered in three different shell materials – each providing its
distinctive acoustic qualities.

But there is even more to this. As all MOMENTUM shell materials are available in the same sizes and
finishes, shell materials can be specifically chosen based on the player’s sound concept – be it as one
homogeneous set or as a specific combination of different characteristics for each drum.

German Beech wood is the classic SONOR sound. It offers a full, warm tone with evenly balanced lows, mids and highs combined with tremendous projection, tone and dynamic versatility.

Scandinavian Birch has a sharp and focused tone with tremendous projection. It provides clear low and high frequencies with a smooth and balanced mid range.

North American Maple offers a mellow, warm and balanced full tone, providing strong low frequencies with a mixed balance of mids and highs.

FAQs about MOMENTUM

Yes. The MOMENTUM series officially replaces both the SQ1 and ProLite product lines. With MOMENTUM, SONOR brings together the strengths of both series while removing the limitations that previously existed in terms of shell materials and surface options.

With the SQ1 and ProLite series, SONOR recognized certain creative limitations. SQ1 was exclusively available as a birch shell with lacquer finishes, while ProLite was limited to maple shells and veneer finishes in semi‑gloss or high‑gloss.
The goal of MOMENTUM was to free drummers from these restrictions. The series introduces SONOR’s full range of wooden shell materials – beech, birch, and maple – and combines them with a selection of finishes inspired by the various surface options from the custom SQ².
Also, with MOMENTUM a modern beech sound becomes regularly available in a pre-configured SONOR series. Overall, MOMENTUM gives drummers access to wrap finishes, satin lacquer finishes and veneer finishes, combined with a selection of multiple shell materials, allowing for greater creative expression in sound and aesthetics.

MOMENTUM stands out because all three available shell materials – beech, birch, and maple – can be ordered in the same range of finishes and sizes. A drummer who prefers a wrap finish, for example, can choose it for any of the three woods. The same applies to satin lacquer or veneer surfaces. This eliminates the conventional link between a particular wood type and finish style.
This level of flexibility allows drummers to create highly personalized configurations. It becomes possible to combine a beech bass drum with maple toms and birch floor toms, or to choose a unified kit made from a single wood species. The concept behind MOMENTUM places complete tonal, visual, and structural freedom in the hands of the player – perfectly captured in our slogan: „Now it’s your turn.“

One of the most significant differences lies in the shell construction. ProLite used a very thin 4mm maple shell with 2mm reinforcement rings, while SQ1 relied on a medium‑heavy 7mm construction made from birch. MOMENTUM moves to a 9‑ply, 6mm medium shell construction. This construction has proven extremely versatile over the years and has become the most popular shell type within SQ², as it responds equally well to soft, subtle playing and powerful performance.

The hardware shares similarities across the three series, yet the mounting systems clearly highlight MOMENTUM’s evolution. The mounted toms use SONOR’s Total Acoustic Resonance (T.A.R.) system, inherited from the ProLite series, while the floor toms rely on the Sound Sustainer system originally introduced with SQ1. Extensive feedback indicated that the Sound Sustainer provides superior resonance behavior for floor toms, while the T.A.R. system works best for mounted toms. MOMENTUM is the first series to combine the strengths of both approaches.
Another major difference lies in the finish options. Whereas SQ1 and ProLite tied a specific shell material to a single surface option, MOMENTUM breaks this pattern entirely. Every finish option is now available with all three woods, opening the door to a far broader level of customization.

Yes. MOMENTUM launches with a carefully curated set of four finishes, but the range will evolve. Just like other SONOR series, MOMENTUM will receive updates over time as new designs, trends, and taste evolves.

MOMENTUM introduces drum depths that fall in-between the rather traditional full‑inch increments. During development, SONOR aimed to create shell proportions that are easier to position and more ergonomic, especially for players who prefer lower setups without compromising sonic intervals.
Standard sizes, especially on 12” and 13” toms, can feel relatively deep and may limit placement options above the bass drum. By implementing evenly spaced ¾‑inch depth intervals – an approach already well‑established on SONOR snare drums – MOMENTUM achieves a more optimized shell profile. These depths provide comfortable positioning while maintaining clear tonal intervals and a balanced, articulate response.

Beech delivers the classic SONOR sound and offers the driest and most tonal character of the three woods, combined with strong projection. Maple provides a warm, hi‑fi sound with focused lows and balanced mids and highs, making it extremely versatile across musical genres and dynamics. Birch emphasizes clarity, definition and depth, offering pronounced high frequencies, boosted low end, and a controlled midrange. Together, these three materials cover a broad tonal spectrum, giving drummers the freedom to choose the sound that suits them best.

Although both the MOMENTUM beech drums and the Vintage series use the same 9‑ply, 6mm beech shell construction, their overall characters differ significantly. The Vintage series uses fully rounded bearing edges and features inward‑flanged Superprofil hoops, both of which naturally produce a dryer, warmer tone with reduced sustain.
MOMENTUM uses modern 45‑degree bearing edges paired with standard 2.3 mm power hoops that flange outward. This configuration results in a more open, articulate, and contemporary sound. While both lines share the tonal qualities inherent to beech, MOMENTUM delivers a more modern attack and a cleaner overall response.

The brass and steel snare drums that were previously part of the ProLite series will not transition into the MOMENTUM lineup. They are discontinued together with the ProLite series. However, German‑made metal snare drums remain an important part of SONOR’s long‑term development and certainly considered.

Yes. MOMENTUM is intentionally launched without a bass drum mount option. During 2026, SONOR will introduce a solution that is interesting for all drummers who would prefer MOMENTUM with a bass drum mount. This approach allows current owners and new buyers to choose the setup that best fits their playing style.
