SONOR Salutes Steve Smith’s 2026 induction into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame
Steve Smith’s remarkable career as a multi-genre drummer of the highest order, exceptional clinician, prolific author, and ambassador for the art of drumming and the drums represents the highest level of musical excellence, dedication, and service to the global drumming community. Steve Smith’s impact on modern drumming is profound and enduring.
Globally recognized for his work with multi-platinum selling and Rock N Roll Hall of fame inductees Journey and the work of his own groundbreaking fusion band Vital Information alone would qualify him for this honor, but the list of accolades and accomplishments goes much further and deeper with a demonstrated technical mastery, musical intelligence, and stylistic versatility across rock, jazz, fusion, big band, world music, and orchestral-influenced settings.
His drumming is instantly identifiable – precise, expressive, and deeply rooted in musical tradition while continually pushing creative and technical boundaries. Beyond performance, he has made exceptional and wholly unique contributions as an educator and historian of drumming. Through clinics, masterclasses, instructional books, videos, downloads, and interviews, he has generously shared his knowledge with generations of drummers specializing in such diverse topics as Indian konnakol rhythm techniques and Drumset Technique & History of the U.S. Beat documented from a research perspective and tracing the roots of the drum set through US musical history. His ability to articulate complex rhythmic concepts in a clear, inspiring, and accessible manner has elevated percussion education worldwide. Few artists have matched his commitment to preserving drumming traditions while encouraging innovation and personal voice.
Steve Smith’s influence also extends to his advocacy for drumming as a serious musical discipline. He has consistently highlighted the importance of studying jazz, global rhythmic traditions, and the lineage of great drummers who shaped the instrument to foster respect for drumming as both an art form and an academic pursuit – values that align directly with the mission of the Percussive Arts Society.
That's why we're so happy for him and would like to congratulate him on this well-deserved appointment!
