Dave Goodman

Cited by the Sydney Morning Herald’s John Clare as “one of the leading drummers in the country, and a star of a younger generation.” Australian drummer Dave Goodman has been capturing the attention of audiences around the world for over twenty years with his distinctive drumming.

Born in the regional Australian city of Tamworth in 1977, Dave began playing the organ at age seven. After that he started with trumpet and snare drum. By the time he was eleven, Dave had acquired his own drumset. And after countless hours of practice, he moved to Sydney at age 17, studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. There he recieved a Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours. Whilst at the Con, at age 18, Dave began working with the legendary Mike Nock Quartet. He gained significant musical and professional insight from the seasoned master.

Since winning second place in the National Jazz Awards at age 20, Dave has performed, toured and recorded music in the USA, UK, Japan, South East Asia and throughout Australia with a diverse range of some of the world’s best-known musical artists such as James Morrison, Don Burrows, Galapagos Duck, Bernie McGann, Dale Barlow and Vince Jones. His long artist list also includes Deni Hines, Billy Field, James Reyne, Jimmy Little, Richard Clapton and Joe Camilleri. He further played with George Golla, Steve McKenna, Greg Page, Bob Barnard, Judy Bailey as well as Geoff Harvey.

Other famous artists he performed with were Stephen Cummings, Tim Rogers, Matt Moffett, Lily Dior, Emma Pask and Craig McLaughlin. Martin Plaza, Dave Faulkner, Jackie Orszaczky, Tina Harrod, Johnnie Johnson, Thelma Houston, Venetta Fields, Glen Tilbrook, Roger Frampton also crossed his path. Moreover he collaborated with Julian Lee, Ten Part Invention, Rory O'Donoghue, James Valentine, Joe Lovano, Bob Berg, Kenny Werner. Cecil McBee, James Williams and Paul Bollenback are also on his list.

In addition, he played with Daryl Grant, Gordon Brisker, Hakuei Kim, Matt McMahon, Sean Wayland, Cathy Harley and Hamish Stuart. Furthermore he met Andrew Robson, Sandy Evans, Carl Dewhurst, Mark Isaacs, James Muller, Steve Hunter, Fiona Burnett and Tim Rogers. Moreover Dave Goodman performed with Gian Slater, Shelley Scown, Rhonda Burchmore, Mark Trevorrow, Paul Capsis, Bertie Blackman and Gerard Masters. More artists are The Idea of North, Kerrie Biddell, Ian Cooper, Carl Risely, Wesley Carr, David Campbell and Jenny Morris amongst many others.

Dave received national television exposure in the late 1990s. He was the resident drummer for ABC TV's O'Loghlin on Saturday Night. He has since recorded numerous soundtracks for television jingles, documentaries and movies.

Dave studied with Joe Morello, Jim Chapin, Billy Hart, Chad Wackerman, Barry Stewart, Andrew Gander, Gordon Rytmeister and Jim Piesse. Therefore he is a dedicated advocate of music education. He teaches at Jazz Workshop Australia. Moreover he has held faculty positions at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Australian Institute of Music as well as having performed for Musica Viva. Dave has also presented drumset clinics and masterclasses in Australia and abroad.

In 2002 Dave recieved the commission to record several original compositions for Jim McLeod's Jazztrack radio program on ABC Classic FM. He was nominated for a prestigious Freedman Fellowship in 2003. Further he gained an award for his third place in the 2004 National Jazz Awards, and again in 2011. His 100,000-word doctoral thesis Tony Williams' drumset ideology to 1969: Synergistic emergence from an adaptive modeling of feel, technique and creativity as an archetype for cultivating originality in jazz drumset performance studies was accepted by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Dave was awarded his PhD in 2011.
